Laos Charity Event Was A Success

Good Wine, Great Food, & Fantastic Friends for an Incredible Cause!

The charity event we held in our office in September was a great success, we raised over $5000 in donations to help support Dr.Bologna's missions trip to Laos in February. Dr.Bologna, with her nephew Kenny, will be traveling to the dental school in Vientiane, Laos to lecture and bring much needed supplies to the students and staff there through Health Volunteers Overseas.

Guests chatted over delicious hors d'oeuvres and fine wines provided by Andiamo Dearborn, while listening to our own Renee Miller and Mike Glaser perform live. Raffles were held and fun was had for all who attended. All the money raised will go towards purchasing more supplies for the dental school; we so greatly appreciate all the support and well wishes, Thank You!

One of our staff members Tied The Knot last month!

Stacy from our front desk staff married her high school sweetheart at their childhood church.

The humorous and heartfelt ceremony was followed by a beautiful reception at O'Kelly's Banquet hall in Dearborn. Surrounded by all of their closest family, friends and co-workers they celebrated their love and the start of their new life together dancing the night away!

Personalized Dental Care felt it was necessary to start out summer 2010 with something that everyone enjoys-- Ice Cream. Dr. Bologna tracked down a local ice cream vendor and planned our first annual P.D.C Ice Cream Social. Any kid, parent or visitor on June 24th, received a free ice cream in our parking lot. We did advise everyone to brush when they got home.

Your Child's First Dental Visit.

Some advice for your child's first visit to the dentist.

Everyone wonders when their child’s first visit to the dentist should be. The American Dental Association recommends that children be brought to the dentist as soon as their first tooth erupts, but no later than their first birthday. This first visit is used to check for bad habits, such as thumb sucking, and obvious signs of decay or malformations. Bringing the child to the office will give them a chance to become accustomed to the surroundings and at their next visit they will be that much more cooperative. This visit also provides an opportunity for us to help guide parents in the proper way to brush their baby’s teeth.

Most children have their full set of deciduous teeth, their baby teeth, around the age of three. As children get older and more comfortable with the dental office, a full child prophylaxis (cleaning and exam) can be performed; this is generally around the age of 3-4 years. It’s a great idea to bring your young children to watch while you are getting your teeth cleaned. Children are very curious and watching your cleaning can improve their level of comfort. During your appointment the hygienist can explain what she is doing, and show the child what to expect at their next visit. We usually recommend morning appointments for young children, they are more attentive and able to cooperate, in the afternoon young children are usually tired, after a fun and exciting day, and are sometimes not as accommodating.

Parents are the most important factor in guiding their children in proper oral hygiene techniques. Your children’s brushing and flossing should be supervised by you until they develop the skills to properly handle the routine, this generally occurs between the ages of 6-8. The best way to help your children develop good habits is by providing them with a well balanced diet and ensuring that they brush twice a day and floss once a day and schedule regular dental checkups for them. We look forward to seeing your whole family.

Dr.Bologna reviews what she looks for during a comprehensive oral exam and it’s importantce to your medical and dental health:

What are you getting from the $30-$45 charge for a “comprehensive oral exam” at your routine dental cleaning?
Some patients ask if they can just have their ” teeth cleaned “and not have the exam. Here are the benefits that you receive from the required oral exam.

As I am washing my hands, gloving and placing face mask, I am looking at your facial symmetry, sclera color (white of your eyes) and skin tone. These three features indicate infection, digestive filtering and blood circulation, respectively. By this time, the hygienist has taken your blood pressure and noted your heart rate. We have recently incorporated base line blood pressure readings in our health history review.

Studies show that most people visit their dentist more often than their family physician. By reviewing these important guidelines and strongly encouraging further investigation of higher than normal readings, we have actually aided in initiating treatment for undetected heart disease.
The bulk of the exam is checking for decay, periodontal disease, occlusion (how teeth fit together and function), soft tissue health and most important - oral cancer.
The use of panoramic radiographs gives us indications of tempromandibular joint disorders, detection of calcifications in the carotid arteries which could lead to strokes, and tumors in the jaw and sinuses. The final head and neck palpations (examination by touch) detect thyroid problems, tumors in neck, abnormal lymph nodes, soft tissue lesions and possible early detection of melanomas.
With all of this going on in my head, I am still able to find out your vacation plans for the summer. I hope this helps to understand where your money is spent in my office.

Cavities: A Brief Description & How to Prevent Them

The last thing anyone wants to hear, when they visit us, is that they have a Cavity!
What exactly are cavities, and what causes them?

A cavity is a hole that causes damage to the structure of a tooth. It’s important to get a cavity taken care of as soon as possible, so that it does not continue to grow and become bigger. A cavity is caused by plaque, which is a sticky substance, made up of germ and bacteria build-up that forms on the tooth. Plaque is acidic and it eats away at the enamel as it clings to the outside of your tooth, thus causing the hole.Fortunately, we can repair your cavities, but here are a few simple ways you can take to prevent them:

• Brush your teeth at least twice daily, gently brush your gums and tongue, as well

• Use a soft bristle brush and make sure your toothpaste has fluoride

• Floss your teeth at least once a day to remove plaque and food that may be caught in places your toothbrush may not be able to reach

• Try to limit the amount of soda and sugary treats you consume

Regular dental checkups are important for maintaining good oral health. In addition to cleaning and checking for cavities, we will check the overall health of your mouth, checking your gums, cheeks and tongue, as well. That way we can treat your oral health problems early, and show you how to properly brush and floss your teeth.
